Holidays in Manitoba

Manitoba has 9 general holidays. If you qualify, you get 5% of your recent wages. Working on the holiday pays 1.5×.

The holidays

  • New Year’s Day: January 1
  • Louis Riel Day: third Monday in February
  • Good Friday
  • Victoria Day: the Monday before May 25
  • July 1 (it doesn’t move when it falls on a Sunday)
  • Labour Day: first Monday in September
  • Orange Shirt Day (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation): September 30
  • Thanksgiving Day: second Monday in October
  • Christmas Day: December 25

Who qualifies

There’s no waiting period. The day card in Week asks two questions:

  • Did you work your first scheduled work day before and after the holiday, or have your employer’s OK to miss it?
  • If you were scheduled to work on the holiday, did you work?

How much

5% of your wages, not counting overtime, in the 4 weeks before the holiday. With fixed hours and wages, the law pays a normal day’s wage, which usually comes to the same.

If you work on the holiday

You’re paid 1.5× for the hours you work, plus your holiday pay, even if you don’t qualify for holiday pay. In continuously operating businesses, hotels, restaurants and some others, your employer may pay your regular rate and give you another day off with pay instead. On the day screen, choose Premium pay or Day off later.

If it’s your day off

Your employer gives you another day off with pay. Paycheq counts the holiday pay on the holiday itself.
